Q1. Tell us about you… what’s your work history to date?
I completed a rigorous Four-Year Apprenticeship with a Pipework Engineering Company where I gained comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in all aspects of Pipework Engineering. This included Pipefitting, welding, NDT, pressure testing, and pipework installation. Throughout my apprenticeship, I worked on numerous Construction Sites and Power Stations, honing my skills and gaining invaluable experience.
In 1984, I joined OIL Eng Ltd, now known as GEG South Fab, as a welder. Since then, I have steadily progressed through various roles, including Workshop Supervisor, Welding Inspector, QA/QC Engineer, and my current position as QA/QC Manager. Each role has provided me with unique insights and opportunities to develop my skills, leading to my current position, where I bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the table.
Q2. What’s your current role and can you describe a typical working day?
As the QA/QC Manager, my workday is dynamic and every day comes with unique challenges. On any given day, I can be engaged in a multitude of tasks, including but not limited to reviewing Technical Specifications and providing expert advice on quality requirements associated with them. Another significant responsibility involves scrutinizing Material Certificates, ensuring their compliance with existing weld procedures, and matching them with the specifications. I also monitor Weld Procedures closely, review NDT reports, Hydrotest and Coating reports. Additionally, I review Subcontractors' Operating procedures and attend crucial meetings such as Kick off, Technical clarification, and weekly progress meetings with the Client.
Q3. What three personality traits define you, and how do these relate to your role?
Integrity - Integrity is paramount to me, both in my personal and professional life. I consider honesty to be a crucial trait that underpins all relationships, and as such, I strive always to be truthful, transparent, and trustworthy in all my dealings with others.
Diligence - As a QA/QC Manager, I understand the importance of diligence and its role in ensuring quality assurance and control. Through a meticulous and diligent approach, I can guarantee that all work is carried out to the highest standards of excellence, leaving no room for errors or defects.
Approachability - Approachability is an essential trait for success in my current role, where I interact with a wide variety of stakeholders, including clients, third-party inspectors, and subcontractors. My friendly and welcoming disposition means that people feel at ease when approaching me, which fosters open communication and effective collaboration to achieve desired outcomes.
